ATAR versus selection rank

Your ATAR and your selection rank are different numbers. The distinction matters when comparing a result with a university course.

ATAR

Your ATAR is the rank issued by the responsible tertiary admissions authority.

Selection rank

A selection rank usually starts with the ATAR and includes adjustments recognised by the university. Adjustments may relate to educational disadvantage, location, subjects, elite performance or other published schemes.

Lowest selection rank

A published lowest selection rank usually describes a previous offer round. It is not a guaranteed future threshold. Demand, available places and the applicant pool change.

Prerequisites still matter

A high rank does not replace mandatory prerequisites, portfolios, interviews, auditions or other course requirements.

Planning preferences

Build a preference list with aspirational choices, realistic choices and secure pathway options. Rank courses in genuine order of preference where the admission system advises it.
